District 11

Tributes and Their Roles

District 11 sends two tributes to the 74th Hunger Games: Rue, a twelve-year-old girl, and Thresh, a powerful and solitary boy. Rue is small, agile, and clever, with a deep knowledge of plants and a remarkable ability to move through trees. She is fiercely protective of her six younger siblings, to whom she gives her own rations. Her greatest love is music, and she uses a four-note melody sung to mockingjays to signal quitting time in the orchards. Thresh is one of the largest tributes, built like an ox, and he rejects the overtures of the Career Tributes, remaining solitary and speaking to no one. Despite his size, he is not a brute; he shows a capacity for mercy and a sense of debt. He scores a ten in training, demonstrating his formidable strength. Rue's Alliance and Death

Rue proves to be a valuable ally, using her knowledge of plants to treat Katniss's tracker jacker stings and her agility to scout the Careers' camp. She also teaches Katniss the mockingjay signal. Their alliance is cut short when Rue is caught in a net and speared by the male tribute from District 1. Katniss kills the boy and holds Rue as she dies, singing her a lullaby. After Rue's death, Katniss covers her body in wildflowers as an act of defiance and mourning. The people of District 11, watching the Games, send Katniss a loaf of bread as a thank-you for her kindness to Rue. Thresh's Intervention and Debt

Thresh, who has been hiding in a field of tall grasses on the far side of the arena, intervenes during the feast at the Cornucopia. He finds Clove, the female tribute from District 2, about to kill Katniss. Thresh kills Clove with a rock, avenging Rue's death, which he heard Clove bragging about. He then confronts Katniss, who tells him she tried to save Rue and that she killed the boy from District 1. Thresh, moved by her account and by the bread his district sent her, spares her life. He tells her, "Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we're even then. No more owed." Katniss understands this, as she herself hates being in debt. Thresh is later killed by Cato, the male tribute from District 2, in a fight in the field of grain. His death is a significant loss, as Katniss had hoped he might win if she could not.

Narrative Role and Significance

District 11 serves as a crucial counterpoint to District 12, illustrating the varied but universally oppressive conditions across Panem. While District 12 is a coal-mining district where starvation is common, District 11 is an agricultural district where the people are forbidden from eating the food they grow. The district's tributes, Rue and Thresh, embody different forms of resistance: Rue through her gentle, clever survival and her love of music, and Thresh through his raw power and his adherence to a personal code of honor.
